Anti Virus Freeware
W32.Blaster.Worm Removal:
|
Win2000/XP:
There are two things you have to get from the Internet before you can remove this worm. 1.
Download FixBlast.exe
from Symantec. 2. Download the update from Microsoft. Place both files in the
same folder. If you get a pop-up saying that Windows will shut down in 60 seconds it's difficult to
download the programs and you can't stop the countdown by Ctrl - Alt - Del.
Here is the
procedure to use: Go to Start / Run and type: Shutdown -a . When you get the pop-up just press
"ok" and the countdown will stop and you can continue your download. When you have downloaded
everything and you're ready to remove the worm first close your Internet connection and deactivate
"systemrecovery". This is important! Press Start - rightclick on "My Computer" - press "properties"
- and choose "Systemrecovery" and check "Deactivate systemrecovery on all disks". Then run the
program FixBlast.exe from Symantec and it will remove the worm. Next, run the update from
Microsoft to close the hole. When the worm is gone grab Startupmonitor 60 K to help protect your startup from further
trojans and worms.

Quick Script-based Virus Fix:
|
Win95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP:
Have you been plagued by Script-based Viruses? Even the latest antivirus software doesn't fully protect you from
the spread of these viruses. There is another line of defense. By changing the default setting for files with the
extensions: VBS, VBE, JS, and JSE from Open to Edit, when you double-click on this file type, the file will open in
NotePad rather than being executed through the Windows Scripting Host (WSH) engine.

Freeware goes Corporate Exerpt from
IDG.NET
"Some corporate users are not fully informed about the state of freeware and wrongly assume that you
always get what you pay for."
The shifting attitude is due in part to a growing recognition among
corporate users that they already rely on freeware to run their Web sites and e-mail systems.
"Even the IT manager of the most conservative company in the Fortune 500 who says `I would never use
open source software' is depending on open source software absolutely if his company uses the Internet
at all," said Tim O'Reilly, founder and CEO of O'Reilly & Associates
Bugnosis:
|
Win95/98/NT/2000/:
Bugnosis sniffs out Web bugs that hide in Web pages. Web bugs are little pieces of code that have a small
graphic attached to them of 1 pixel by 1 pixel. These graphics are too small to be seen by the naked eye and
as such are used to track you around the Internet. This little utility plugs into Internet Explorer and warns you
when it finds what it thinks is a web bug. (We don't have any Web bugs here).

Extension Manager:
|
Win95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP:
To protect against viruses, trojan horses, and worms masquerading as a harmless file type, you need
to be able to see your filename extensions (.exe, .gif, and so on). Trojan/worms such as SirCam has
been transmitted to people this way. Extension Manager allows you hide and unhide file extensions,
including those extensions that are usually only viewable by tweaking the Registry. Extension Manager
lists seven (7) of the most commonly viewed used file extension, including extensions like .PIF, .SHS
and .LNK. Even though you might have unmarked Hide file extensions for known file types in the Folder
Options of Windows Explorer, there are still a handful of file extensions that don't show up.

Filemon:
|
Win95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP:
Filemon monitors and displays file system activity on a system in real-time. Its advanced capabilities
make it a powerful tool for exploring the way Windows works, seeing how applications use the files and
DLLs, or tracking down problems in system or application file configurations. Filemon's timestamping
feature will show you precisely when every open, read, write or delete, happens, and its status column
tells you the outcome. Filemon is so easy to use that you'll be an expert within minutes. It begins
monitoring when you start it, and its output window can be saved to a file for off-line viewing. It has full
search capability, and if you find that you're getting information overload, simply set up one or more
filters.

StartPage Guard:
|
Win95/98/ME/NT/2000:
StartPage Guard (SPG) protects your PC from cyberscams, by monitoring status of your Internet
browser StartPage and preventing it from any unauthorized changes. Malicious programs (viruses,
trojans, backdoors, etc.) sometimes change the StartPage to "gain ground". Spyware uses this
way to invade user's privacy by tracking destinations which a user visited, and collects personal
information. In some cases this activity may be totally transparent to the user. But most often this
is just plain annoyance when start page is changed without asking user's permission. SPG
effectively deals with all this problems, making surfing the net safer, more secure, and by
reducing frustration. 621 K

TrojanCheck:
|
Win95/98/ME/NT/2000:
TC is a program to detect and remove (unknown) trojans. The main purpose from this program is
guarding starting points used by trojans to secretely hide in the system, although there is a full
trojan scanning engine (IVF3 from the anti-trojan ANTS v2.0) has been implemented. TrojanCheck
shows changes in the starting points at the spot and offers the possibility to undo these changes.
Included is a Process Viewer, to enable further analysis. Note: the "help files" are still in German
language; an English version will be released as soon as possible. (German) 1.2 MB
